(1779-1813) Пайк, Зебулон МонтгомериВоенный, исследователь. В 1805 лейтенант Пайк получил приказ исследовать северную часть территорий, отошедших к США при покупке Луизианы [ Louisiana Purchase]. Отправившись в первую экспедицию к верховьям р. Миссисипи [Pike's expedition to the upper Mississippi] (1805-06), он изучил земли западнее г. Сент-Луиса [ St. Louis], в 1806 дошел по р. Арканзас [ Arkansas River] до Скалистых гор [ Rocky Mountains], где открыл вершину, названную его именем [ Pike's Peak]. Во время второй экспедиции по Юго-Западу [Pike's Southwestern expedition] (1806-07) дошел до р. Рио-Гранде [ Rio Grande River], где был захвачен испанцами, которые отпустили его только в 1807. По возвращении получил звание полковника, в 1810 опубликовал воспоминания, в которых впервые были описаны обширные районы Юго-Запада [ Southwest].
